Are The Numbers On Desktop Computers Important?

Processor names change on a regular basis.  Don't try to figure out what they mean by numbers such as P8400, 9100E or Q9300.  Instead, make sure you get a dual core system.  For a cheap desktop computer, that means an Intel Pentium Dual-Core, an AMD 64X2 or an AMD TurionX2.  If you need more power for something such as video gamingpr video editing, then you should consider the Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Phenom.  Really hard core should bump it up a notch and buy an Intel Core 2 Quad system which has 4 processors.  By the way, Centrino refers to the chipset houses some Intel processors.

Gamers and video editors need to ensure they have a top of the line video graphics card and memory.  Personally, I recommend at least 4GB.

The AMD's next generation line of laptops has been disappointing.  It is based on the Turion X2 processor.  Laptops with these chipsets including some models from HP and Toshiba scorded significantly lower than those with Intel Centrino 2 models.  They took hits on battery life as well as slower speed.

The demand for the small laptops is increasing driven partly by their price, usually starting at around $250.  Weighing only 2 to 3 pounds and having a 7" to 10" display makes them ideal for you on the go types.Models I saw had cramped keyboards and a sluggish performance.

Some of the new laptops have screens with a 16:9 aspect ratio.  They are shorter than the traditional 16:10 models allowing you to view High Definition content without the usual black bars surrounding the picture.

How do you choose from this olio of units?  You pick the size you would like and match it as closely as you can with the price you can afford.  If you are going to replace a desktop computer with a laptop computer, then go for one with a 17" screen.  Smaller laptop models tend to have a longer battery life.  You pay for the big screen by giving up battery life.

With a cheap desktop desktop computer, you trade off between size and price.  An all in one unit costs less but the traditional unit takes up more space.  You give a little and get a little.

If I could make but one suggestion, it would be to get all of the memory (RAM) you can afford.  Ram is where the work gets done and less ram means a slower computer.  Shop around but make sure you look at  our cheap desktop computers and our cheap laptop computers
